Sitz Bath Treatments

The sitz bath is often recommended for the relief of symptoms and discomfort from conditions such as hemorrhoids, yeast infections and childbirth. Soaking the area of concern three to four times and up to several times daily, is a form of hydro or water therapy.  When the sitz bath is taken for at least 15 minutes in either hot or cold (as prescribed by a physician or healthcare provider) issues such as swelling, pain and itching are relived and the area can be kept cleaner when wiping causes irritation.
Your doctor may also prescribe additives such as salt, baking soda or herbal mixtures. These ingredients help to heal and soothe but it is important to check with your healthcare provider before adding ingredients as some may aggravate symptoms.

Many patients choose to buy a portable sitz bath tub to save time and effort during treatments. These tubs are usually made of plastic or are inflatable for comfort and placed into the toilet seat. This makes the filling and emptying process much quicker than when using a conventional bathtub. Portable sitz tubs usually range in price from 10 to 20 dollars and can be ordered online or purchased at a local pharmacy retail store.

Soaking in a hot sitz bath can cause temporary dizziness so it is important that patients, especially elderly patients, rise slowly from the tub and exit with caution. It may be wise to have assistance nearby for exiting the bath or utilize the portable type sitz bath tub for ease of standing and sitting.

One note of importance regarding sitz baths and at home treatments is to be sure that the right treatment is being given. If rectal bleeding is present and bleeding hemorrhoids are suspect, or if a vaginal yeast infection is suspected, it’s important to be sure of the source of bleeding or other symptoms. Please check with your doctor unless you are absolutely sure of the origin of these medical issues.  Rectal bleeding can be a sign of a very serious condition.
